Long Time Coming

I am behind on everything, real life has kicked me to hell and messed up my brain in all sorts of ways. I spent the whole of March with a bad back, I couldn't go near my desktop and ended up using my Samsung Galaxy Note to keep up to date on the internet news as well as fandom. My back is back to normal for now and for the first time in 2 months, I'm sleeping normal hours but only if I go to bed at 1 am, otherwise my brain will wake me up at 3 am no matter what hour I go to bed, which sucks like you would not believe.

I've been reading a lot, watching some good films and playing video games. Stress has been a real wrack on me and it's not looking like letting up any time soon, so I won't be as active as I'd like. And that's something I really hate, because while I'm a natural lurker, not being active online doesn't fit me.

I hope everyone is well, I owe a letter or two to a few pen pals, I hope to get those done soon. Please feel free to comment and let me know how you've been doing.

Well, we already caught up on Tumblr a bit, but man, bodies... sometimes it feels like we're old women instead of in our 20s. I've also had some trouble adjusting to my new medication and I'm still not happy with it, but there haven't been any more seizures, so I get that at least.

On a happier note DUDE YOU HAVE TO WATCH 'VIKINGS'. There isn't a single thing about it that isn't brilliant. There are two magnificent ladies! Fascinating treatment of the clash of faiths theme! A++ cinematography! Also George Blagden is an adorable human puppy that I want to carry around in my pocket!

Oh, and it shits on Game of Thrones from cruise altitude, and this is coming from a GoT fan OK?

Seriously though, what with all these applications and throwing my resume left and centre while waiting for some conclusive results, I've just been staying home and watching a lot of series/films. How about you, seen anything good?

OK, I've put Green Zone down on my list for when I have a break. I'm not really that tempted by The Dark Knight Rises though I've heard nothing but good things about it. Anyway, you know me and superhero films, it took me over a year to watch Thor after its release and like three years to watch TDK. Surprisingly, I enjoyed both, so I guess I'll get there eventually.

RE: Vikings, yes exactly, I didn't expect the OT3 either and it hit me like a freight train. There's some very very good meta for this series on Tumblr, particularly on the issue of Athelstan's slavery and I'm so curious how they're going to handle that eventually. I follow a couple of blogs written by Catholics and they make wonderfully pertinent comments on both the religious bits and the mythical archetypes in the series and it's just wonderful. It's a fandom full of really smart and well-informed people and I can't wait for the fanfic to really take off.

Speaking of which, I'm really considering starting a list of Things I Learned Because of Fandom. Like, both practical knowledge and history/theory/whatever that I got interested in because of fandom. There's so much of it it's ridiculous.

Hey sis! How's it going? I realized the course was keeping you busy, and I hope it's going well for you. I agree Tumblr's been a bit odd lately so it doesn't seem to be a depends-on-your-dash thing. Or maybe it is, I don't know. In any case, I'm still keeping up because there's a reverse bang running in the Spartacus community and since it's probably the fandom's last hurrah, I decided to participate.

The great news is I found a place to live in Helsinki in a commune with five other researchers. There's a big house and our own sauna and vegetable garden and it's on an island, between the sea and a forest. It sounds like something out of the movies, but it's real and I just signed the housing agreement this week. I'll be leaving on August 6th, by then hopefully they'll transfer me the grant money to.

So. I'm headed for Finland again. And if not this autumn, at least next spring I will sneak in a visit to London, while I can still be 100% sure I can afford it :)

That graphic is screencaps from four different movies put together in about 2 hours. I'm... kind of amazed it got picked up on the first day. I mean, there's a zombie apocalypse prompt and one about magic pirates. Someone watched this show and had the brilliance to imagine a magic pirate AU! But yeah, the person who claimed mine contacted me to discuss some details and she seems quite nice. So, that's exciting.

Speaking of zombie apocalypses, I've been watching The Walking Dead. It's pretty over-the-top gory but once you get past that, it's good. Some badass ladies with character development and machetes, one Korean dude who looks like a mousey video game nerd until beats the shit out of some people while tied to a chair, tragic villains, the lot. Also a katana-wielding lady I've got a massive crush on.

It's great that you're enjoying the course. Putting your brain to work in a more structured environment can be refreshing and I'm glad it turned that way for you :)
